Da Vinci’s Ideative Process
Leonardo da Vinci, Renaissance man, scientist, engineer, artist, and visionary, was incredibly Ideative. He sketched, dissected humans, engineered great military and civil projects along with his painting and sculpture. Da Vinci’s noteooks make fascinating study.
The Ideative challenge; mimic Da Vinci’s endless universal curiosity.
The foundation of Developing Beyond: Routinely Break Routines!
Routinely Break Routines. Write that statement where you’ll see it every day. Make breaking your routine something that in of itself is routine.
The brain is lazy. It changes only when it has to. And the conditions that consistently force the brain to rewire itself occur when it confronts something novel. Novelty equals learning, and learning means physical rewiring of the brain.
Create an Ideative environment– a place that inspires your Ideativeness
• Traveling to exotic, beautiful, locales for inspiration is great because you get an intense volume of input at very high speed. Plus, your brain is freed from your routine and therefore free to think.
• Create a special space, an Ideative room, filled with great and silly inventions and ideas and art and anything you find interesting. Change these things around frequently so that you listen to different music and see different posters, and play with different toys while you are in your Ideative space.
• Meet people. Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence and myriad other works, advises those that want to do cool things to hang with cool people. You want to hang with Ideative people to share your enthusiasm and ideas.
• You probably know quite a few people that could be inspired to become Ideative. Teach them to be Ideative, send them to this site, and get involved with them.
For Example...
For example, if you are looking for an idea for a new electronic game or toy, read consumer electronics print and online magazines cover to cover, read the back issues, and other magazines, blogs, and all other variety of print and online magazines covering everything from sports to skateboarding to games in history. Play every game you can and watch others play as well.
Your goal is to stuff your brain with information on electronic toys, your Ideative subject, until you feel that it is going to burst with Es & Ks on your subject. Surf the internet, find foreign sites to see not only the gadgets they use but the way they live. You can even justify travel as Ideative saturation excursions. Play games with small children and steer their imaginations toward toys that don’t exist and let them tell you how they use them. Hang with your target and non-target audiences. Visit art galleries and rock clubs. The key is to saturate your brain with your Ideative subject and a few items that don’t fit, just to stir your thoughts up.
Focus on Vivid: Ideative’s most potent variable For Es and Ks.
The more Vivid you make each E & K that you add to your Ideative blocks, the more opportunities for those Es & Ks to be pulled into connections as a component in an Idea.
Vivid means the combination of the inputs from:
1. Your five senses, and;
2. All of the emotional inputs attached to that E & K.
The higher the level of Vivid, the greater the number of connections your brain creates, bringing into play more areas of your brain in the form of larger neural circuits. The table below gives some examples of different Ideative interests and how you can make your E & K growth more Vivid in these areas.
Thanks to phenomenal advances in neuroscience we know that each block that makes up our E and K, the visuals, sounds, scents, and emotions, are stored in multiple areas within the brain and that each block has multiple blocks connected to it, creating an exponentially expanding chain of resources to use in building ideas.
