I would add that failures are nothing to be feared in a down economy if they are test failures. In line with the Agile mentality there should be nothing preventing an organization from building a small prototype or pilot program to apply a test and learn strategy to new ideas. Digital technology, lean manufacturing, and other innovations mean there is ample opportunity to try before you buy. The biggest risk in this approach is that you need a sharp team you can rely on and you need the organizational support to spend your time strategically rather than tactically.

Bob - excellent advice. Achieving product teams and companies will invest in down times which may also include cutting costs from less critical projects in fvor of more critical and strategic projects- cite the development and acquisitions at some large tech companies recently, per the WSJ. These companies will be that much better positioned when the economy recovers.
